Tolls and interstate permits for cabs in South India: how they work
Two charges ride along on every outstation cab fare that nobody explains: the toll the highway collects at each plaza, and the permit a taxi pays a state for crossing its border. Most operators quote a fare and add the words toll extra, which means you find out the real price at the gates. This page is what those two lines are, who pays them, and what they come to on the roads people actually drive.
1. Toll: what the highway charges
A toll is collected per plaza, per crossing, by the vehicle class. A taxi pays the car rate, the same as a private car. Every national-highway plaza has taken FASTag only since February 2021; a car without a working tag is charged double the cash rate, so a cab with a dead tag is a cab that costs you twice at every gate. Long corridors cross many plazas, and the total is what matters. It is the figure the route page itemises.
A return through the same plaza within 24 hours is charged at roughly one and a half times a single crossing rather than double. A FASTag applies that on its own. A round trip that stays overnight pays the full toll in both directions, which is why a two-day Ooty trip carries more toll than a same-day Mysuru run of similar distance.
2. Permit: what the border charges
A taxi is a commercial vehicle. When it enters another state it owes that state motor-vehicle tax for the days it stays there, collected at the RTO checkpost on the border or paid online in advance. The amount depends on the state and on the seating capacity of the car, not on distance, and it is charged per entry. A one-way Bengaluru to Chennai cab enters Tamil Nadu once and pays once. A round trip also pays once, because the car crosses into Tamil Nadu once and drives home to Karnataka, where it is registered.
On the routes we price, a hatchback or sedan carries ₹400 per crossing and an SUV ₹1,000. Between them, 124 of our 238 priced routes cross a state line, across Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Telangana. A route that stays inside one state, Bengaluru to Mysuru or Chennai to Madurai, carries no permit at all.

The figures are what a Gaadix fare carries, taken from the same pricing engine the booking flow uses. States revise their rates from time to time; the route page always shows the current line.
3. Why a fare that says toll extra is not a fare
A quote of four thousand rupees with toll and permit extra can be four thousand seven hundred by the time you reach Chennai, paid in cash at every gate and one checkpost, with the driver naming the amount each time. Nothing is wrong with the driver; the structure invites rounding up. A toll-inclusive fare removes the conversation. The toll and the permit are printed on the quote before you book, the driver pays them by FASTag and receipt, and the total you saw is the total you pay. That is the whole reason Gaadix prices toll-inclusive, and why every route page lists the two lines separately instead of folding them into a number.
4. The ten routes with the most toll
For a sedan, one way. The longer the corridor, the more of it runs on tolled national highway, which is why the coast-to-coast and cross-state drives lead this list.
| Route | Distance | Toll (sedan) | Permit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangalore to Trivandrum | 719 km | ₹1,079 | ₹400 |
| Chennai to Kanyakumari | 707 km | ₹1,060 | none, same state |
| Kanyakumari to Bangalore | 647 km | ₹970 | ₹400 |
| Hyderabad to Chennai | 631 km | ₹947 | ₹400 |
| Goa to Bangalore | 593 km | ₹889 | ₹400 |
| Mysore to Belagavi | 591 km | ₹887 | none, same state |
| Alleppey to Bangalore | 575 km | ₹863 | ₹400 |
| Hyderabad to Bangalore | 567 km | ₹851 | ₹400 |
| Tirupati to Hyderabad | 561 km | ₹842 | ₹400 |
| Chennai to Rameswaram | 559 km | ₹839 | none, same state |

5. What is not a toll
- →Airport entry and pickup-zone fees. Airports charge their own, and on an airport transfer they appear as a separate line at cost.
- →City expressway plazas, such as the airport road out of Bengaluru. They are tolls, but short ones, and they are inside the city fare, not the outstation one.
- →Parking at your destination while the car waits for you on a round trip. That is paid where it is incurred.
- →Hill-station entry. Ooty, Kodaikanal and Munnar charge nothing at the town limit for a car; the toll ends where the ghat road begins.
- →Driver allowance on a multi-day trip. It is a daily amount for the driver, printed on the fare, and has nothing to do with the road.
Questions people ask
Who pays the toll on an outstation cab, the passenger or the driver?+
The passenger, always. The only question is whether it is inside the fare or collected in cash at each plaza. A toll-inclusive fare has it itemised before you book; a toll-extra fare leaves you paying the driver at every gate, with no receipt and no way to check the amount.
What is an interstate permit charge on a taxi?+
A commercial vehicle entering another state pays that state a motor-vehicle tax for the days it stays. It is collected at the border checkpost or paid online, and it is charged per entry, not per kilometre. A one-way Bengaluru to Chennai cab pays Tamil Nadu once; a round trip pays once too, because it enters Tamil Nadu once.
Is the permit the same for every car?+
No. It scales with seating capacity. On our routes a hatchback or sedan carries ₹400 per crossing and an SUV ₹1,000, the figures the pricing engine itemises on the route page.
Does a round trip pay toll twice?+
Yes, once in each direction. Most NHAI plazas charge a return journey within 24 hours at about one and a half times a single crossing rather than double, and a FASTag applies that automatically. A multi-day round trip pays the full amount both ways.
Is FASTag mandatory for taxis?+
Yes, on every national-highway plaza since February 2021. A vehicle without a working FASTag is charged double the cash rate. Every Gaadix car carries one, so the plaza never stops the trip to argue about change.
Are airport entry and parking part of the toll?+
No. Airports charge their own entry and pickup-zone fees, and city expressways have their own plazas. On an airport transfer these appear as separate lines on the fare, at cost.
